Maize flour products have been fortified with “Vitamin A” and “Iron” since 1994.

Rab Processsors has made the early development of children and their well-being, in low income households of Malawi, a corporate priority. The production of fortified food products such as Likuni Phala demonstrates the company’s commitment to this goal.

Today the agricultural produce sourced from smallholder farmers is processed at the company’s factories in Blantyre into fortified and nutritious food products for distribution in Malawi and internationally. Some of the fortified food products include household names such as Sunshine Cream of Maize, Snow White Ufa Woyera and Sunshine Likuni Phala.

The lifesaver, high-protein formula for infants and growing children

In the mid 1980s, Rab Processors Limited (Rab) was invited by United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to produce Likuni Phala for extensive use in WFP’s relief activities. Rab Processors with its own research and development activities and a substantial capital investment, developed Likuni Phala further using maize and soya with extruder technology. We are also proud of the fact that Rab Processors is regarded as the pioneer in the use of extruder technology in Africa.
Today, WFP and other Food Aid Agencies operating in Malawi use Likuni Phala as the main supplementary food in their feeding programmes.
In the late 1980s, Rab commenced producing an improved version of Likuni Phala with added sugar, milk & vanilla flavour, available to the general public under the brand name of Sunshine Likuni Phala. Sunshine Likuni Phala is today a household name, liked by babies, preferred and trusted by caring mothers.

WFP and other Food Aid Agencies operating in Malawi use Likuni Phala as the main supplementary food in their feeding programmes. One such NGO, Mary’s Meals, runs an extensive school feeding programme across the country. Rab uses its extensive rural presence and logistical capacity to penetrate deep into the countryside – to reach even the remotest rural communities where the situation is really dire.
Rab ensures that all feeding centres receive good quality product as well as free and relevant instructions on proper usage and storage. Rab’s technical team and advisers give the necessary support wherever and whenever needed. There is regular interaction with local school feeding committees to ensure that best practices in the preparation and storage of the product are adopted. To further simplify storage issues, special colour coded packaging has been developed.

This concerted effort ensures that all children under this program enjoy the full nutritional benefits of LikuniPhala. By supplying LikuniPhala through Mary’s Meals school feeding program, Rab Processors Ltd has significantly increased the number of children benefiting from this lifesaving food product.

SIBUSISO Study (excerpt of OPC Report)

Gift of the Givers Foundation (GOTG) donated Sibusiso“ready to eat food” to the Government of Malawi for distribution to 1,000 civil servants for a period of six months through the Department of Nutrition, HIV and AIDS, of the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC), in November 2006. The donation was distributed to different Ministries and Government Departments who submitted lists of People Living With HIV and AIDS (PLWHA), and who requested for the product.
